Torpedo Bombers are bombers that, as the name hints, drop torpedoes. As would be expected, they can only target naval units, such as boats and submarines. Hover units are unable to be hit by their attacks. To balance out their limited target selection, Torpedo bombers possess free sonar, inflict massive damage with their torpedo salvos, and are the only non-naval counter against submarines. The only problem with using them against naval units are their rather sluggish turning speed, implying that they need a larger attack run at their targets than other aircraft.
They also do, surprisingly, the same amount of damage. In fact, except for the Aeon T3 torpedo bomber, all torpedo bombers are practically identical save for factors such as speed and appearance.
Advantages[]
Torpedo bombers are better than T2 gunships and T2 fighter/bombers when attacking naval units for several reasons:
- They attack before they reach the target, so even if shot down, their attacks still hit.
- Their attacks also home in, thus ignoring target movement.
- Torpedo bombers are faster than gunships, and can avoid most naval AA.
- Torpedo bombers can attack submerged units.
- Torpedo bombers cost less than a faction's gunships and fighter/bomber, and build faster.
Factional Differences[]
UEF[]
The Stork is the toughest T2 torpedo bomber at 860 hp, and has the slowest torpedo making it not suitable for taking out fast ships, but otherwise has no exceptional attributes.
Cybran[]
The Cormorant is another 'average' torpedo bomber. Its name comes from a dive-fishing bird the, cormorant. It has the least health of the torpedo bombers (800 hp). It possesses the Cybrans' typical nanite torpedoes, which deal damage over time.
Aeon[]
The Skimmer is more or less identical to the other torpedo bombers, but uses a Harmonic Depth Charge instead of torpedoes. This may make its attack unblockable by Anti-Torpedo Flares.
The Aeon are also unique in their possession of a T3 torpedo bomber, the Solace. It is faster, tougher, and deals 6 times the damage of the Skimmer, but is much more expensive and you would normally be better using Skimmers to do the job, unless durability, speed and re-usability are called for.
Seraphim[]
The Seraphim T2 Torpedo Bomber, while more or less identical to the other torpedo bombers, is more important to the Seraphim due to their lack of a T3 gunship.
