The Tech 2 Tactical Missile Defenses (TMD) are fixed base defense structures, with mounted tactical missile defense weapons.
Advantages and Use[]
Tactical Missile Defenses are relatively cheap at 280 mass. They only cost about 170% of the cost of a 180 mass structure-fired Tactical Missile meaning they will pay off after shooting down two missiles. They should be placed anywhere your base might be vulnerable to Tactical Missiles. For example, the core cluster of Tech 2 mass extractors (each 900 mass), which can be destroyed by a single missile; or a T2 Factory which can be taken out by two missiles. TMD costs a fraction of each of these structures. TMD can also be used to protect a stationary or unshielded ACU. Thus, Tech 2 Tactical Missile Defenses are very cost effective.
Tactical missiles travel quickly, and take awhile to be destroyed, so it is advantageous to place the Tactical Missile Defenses as close as possible to the front line, giving them the maximum amount of time available to destroy the missile.
Weaknesses[]
It's important to remember that a single TMD will not destroy 100% of inbound missiles. They will be overrun and destroyed easily by large salvos of missiles. To prevent this, one solution is to build several Tactical Missile Defenses, but then you risk spending too many resources on defending a single attack vector. Another alternative is placing the TMD behind a shield. However, this limits their missile-destroying capabilities, as missiles have a tendency to smack into shields just before the missile is destroyed. This tendency, combined with the way the Aeon Volcano works, makes the Volcano much less effective behind shields. However if you have a lot in your base and made sure they are all covering each other, they will be much harder to kill.
Factional Differences[]
The four Tech 2 Tactical Missile Defenses, the UEF Buzzkill, the Cybran Zapper, the Aeon Volcano, and the Seraphim Ythisatha are all equivalent in terms of cost, though the Volcano has about half the health. What sets them apart are each faction's tactical missile defense technology.
The Zapper destroys missiles immediately and is arguably the best TMD of all the factions. It is able to go behind shields and still function properly, since the missiles are destroyed immediately.
The Volcano fires a sort of missile flare that can attract multiple missiles, but its fire rate is extremely slow, and because it lures them, don't put them next to any important structures.
The Buzzkill and Ythisatha are very similar in that they shoot at the missiles, but the Ythisatha turns faster, making the buzzkill the weakest TMD.
