Adjacency bonus layout

Adjacency bonus layout: 1 shield, 4 power generators, 4 mass fabricators, and 12 mass storages

The term adjacency bonus refers to the decrease in operating cost that certain buildings can bestow upon certain other buildings which are adjacent to them. A building can receive an adjacency bonus, give an adjacency bonus or do both. For the purposes of Supreme Commander, the term adjacent does not include squares which are diagonally adjacent. For example, a 1x1 square building has 4 1x1 squares next to it which are considered adjacent, each being next to one face of the 1x1 square building. Correspondingly, a 3x3 building has 12 adjacent squares. Mobile units (i.e. anything except buildings) are not capable of receiving adjacency bonuses. Adjacency bonuses are clearly represented by a thin colored line formed between two buildings. This indicates an established connection where mass and energy are transferred and designates that one of the buildings is giving a bonus to the other.

Although constructing buildings close together to take advantage of adjacency bonuses gives an economic benefit, there is a significant military drawback. Some buildings explode violently when they are destroyed, which will damage or destroy adjacent buildings. In the worst case, an enemy destroying one building can cause a chain reaction that destroys several. Also, enemy weapons that are inaccurate or have an area of effect are more effective when firing on buildings that are close together.

How they work[]

There are five types of adjacency bonus each of which is provided by a different type of structure. These are:

  • Mass consumption reduction, from mass production facilities to mass consuming structures.
  • Energy consumption reduction, from energy production facilities to energy consuming structures.
  • Mass production increase, from mass storage structures to mass production facilities.
  • Energy production increase, from energy storage structures to energy production facilities.
  • Increased firing rate, from energy production facilities to T2 artillery installations.

For example, a power generator placed next to a factory will reduce the power consumption of the factory. Similarly, a mass storage facility placed next to a mass extractor will increase the mass production of the extractor. The adjacency bonuses a building is receiving are displayed, indirectly, through the +/- mass and +/- energy display included in the mouse-over details for a building (i.e. the numbers you see when you mouse over a building are different to normal if it is receiving an adjacency bonus). Additionally, a glowing linkage will connect two buildings if there is an exchange of adjacency bonus taking place between them. The bonus which is provided by a type of building will continue to be provided whether or not the bonus-giving building is powered up.

The curved white lines are the game's method of displaying adjacency bonuses. Each of these factories has a significantly lower operating cost.

In general, only buildings which are essentially economy-related (production facilities of some sort) receive adjacency bonuses. Missile silos, although they are production facilities, do not receive adjacency bonuses. Static defenses do not receive bonuses either. Shield generators and artillery installations, however, are able to receive energy consumption reduction bonuses. Shield's energy cost to upgrade and to run will decrease, artillery will be given high ROF. Shields can also receive mass facility bonuses to assist with upgrading. Factories are able to receive consumption reduction bonuses of both types, but it should be noted that this reduction only applies to the factory itself and will not affect any engineers that are assisting it. Upgrade costs are affected by adjacency bonuses.

Adjacency bonuses are proportional, not absolute. This means that adjacency bonuses are generally best expressed in terms of a percentage. It also means that although two buildings can be experiencing the same bonus, it may be more significant in one building or the other depending on their baseline consumption/production. This is best explained through example. Building A uses 100 energy/tick while building B uses 10 energy/tick. Both buildings then become adjacent to a building which gives them each a 10% reduction in energy consumption. Now building A uses 90 energy while building B uses 9 energy. Each has received the same proportional bonus, but the absolute reduction in energy is greater for building A because it had the higher baseline consumption rate. For a specific example, the Air Factory vs the Land Factory. Air factories will always receive higher bonuses for the same number of adjacency because they use more power to construct power-heavy air units than land factories use.

The magnitude of the bonus a building receives is mainly a function of two things(there is an exception which will be discussed later):

  • The tech level of the building that is generating the bonus
  • The number of adjacent squares that are occupied by bonus-giving structures

For those comfortable with mathematics, this idea can be understood through the following formula:

  • B - The bonus received by the target building (as a proportion)
  • M - This is equal to the bonus a building would receive if it was surrounded by the given bonus-giving building type (as a proportion).
  • S - The number of adjacent squares occupied by the bonus-giving building type.
  • T - The total number of squares that are adjacent to the receiving building (remember to exclude corners).

This formula only deals with one building type at a time. As a side note, the maximum bonus a bonus-giving building type may give is probably the most appropriate way to express the bonus given by a building type, with the only real alternative being a maximum per face measure.

Adjacency bonuses that reduce consumption differ for different tech levels of the same building type. For example, a Tech 3 power generator reduces the power consumption of adjacent buildings more than a Tech 1 power generator. As there is currently only one tech level for storage in the game, it is unknown what effect higher tech level storage will have on its adjacent buildings relative to lower tech level storage.

As the formula above illustrates, a 1x1 square building next to a 1x1 square power generator will receive a bonus 3 times the magnitude of the bonus that a 3x3 square building would receive from that same power generator (proportionally speaking). So although larger buildings have more adjacent space to be occupied with bonus-giving buildings, they receive less bonus per space than smaller buildings (all other things being equal).

An important thing to note about adjacency bonuses is that no bonus will be exchanged between two buildings unless at least one of the buildings has a face of which the entire length is coincident with a face of the other building. To understand this, see the diagram below.

The buildings indicated with red arrows are not receiving any adjacency bonus from the tech 2 power generator in the centre because the parts of the faces that are highlighted in red are not overlapping the faces of the tech 2 power generator. Note that even though the tech 1 and tech 3 mass fabricators are of different sizes, they obey the same rule as regards their adjacency requirements with the tech 2 power generator.

The following percentages are the maximum increase/reduction that a building type can give to another building when the target building is surrounded by the bonus-giving building type.

Mass generation[]

Although Extractors and Fabricators can receive both an Energy Usage Reduction Bonus and Mass Production Increase Bonus, it's more preferable to go with the Mass Production Bonus provided by Mass Storage Units since Mass always tends to run out first and is hard to come by.

Aeon T3 Quantum Optics Facility (Campaign)

An interesting note about the T3 Quantum Optics Facility is that it will malfunction and cease to operate if it has more than 15 T1 Generators connected to it.

This is possibly due to a programming oversight in which it cannot accept any more Usage Reduction Bonuses without going below its Minimum Energy Consumption. Any more Generators would result in the Quantum Optics Facility PRODUCING Energy instead of CONSUMING it.

But as the table shows, it is far cheaper and more space saving to surround the T3 Quantum Optics Facility with T1 Generators than with T2 or T3 Generators.

Generators will increase the Rate of Fire for T2 Artillery Installations (If playing "FAForever", then also T3 Heavy Artillery Installations).

An interesting note about T3 Heavy Artillery Installations is that their energy usage per shot gets slightly increased when they are adjacent to an odd number of generators, but remains the same when adjacent to an even number of them. T4 Mavor, an UEF experimental artillery, does not get any adjacency bonuses at all, despite having a visual link when adjacent to generators.
